Menter Iaith Môn was established in 1997 – and our mission statement remains the same today “…to promote and facilitate the Welsh language on the island...”
The Menter Iaith is a local organisation which offers support to communities to increase and develop their use of the Welsh language. The Menter Iaith services the whole of Ynys Môn, and it reflects the wish of local people to make more use of the language. The Menter offers advice and assistance to individuals, organisations and businesses, and we organise activities to raise the profile of the Welsh language.
Today in Ynys Môn just over 60% of the population speak Welsh (2001 census) which makes Ynys Môn one of the strongholds of the Welsh language. The language is alive in the home, in the workplace, in schools and in the community. Over 73% of children and young people speak Welsh on Ynys Môn.
We work to maintain the high number of Welsh speakers in the areas of the island but we also work to try and increase the numbers in the areas where the numbers are not as high.
