Welsh in the Community
- The 2001 Census shows us that the number of Welsh speakers in communities across Wales vary greatly. Just over 20% of the people of Wales speak Welsh today – an increase on the 1991 Census results.
- There are Welsh speakers in every community in Wales – the language is spoken in many homes, schools, communities and societies.
- The % of Welsh speakers in North Wales vary from county to county. Your local Menter Iaith can identify, tailor and hold suitable events for the area it is servicing.
- The 2001 Census results also show us that the age of the average Welsh speaker in Wales is becoming younger as Welsh language education provision increases. However, there are many areas where there are very few opportunities to use the language in the community.
The Mentrau Iaith across North Wales have much experience in assisting local communities to increase the opportunities available through the medium of Welsh.
Your Menter Iaith will be able to assist you to hold events to promote and facilitate use of the language in your area. There are many Festivals being held in each of the counties every year, and gigs and social evenings are held regularly – why don’t you join us or arrange your own event!
For more information about how we can assist your community, contact your local Menter Iaith.
