MENTRAU IAITH AND THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR

The Mentrau Iaith offer advice and support to a wide range of community groups. When working with the Voluntary Sector we promote the advantages of using the Welsh language:

  • It offers a better service for Welsh speakers.
  • It gives recognition to the bilingual nature of Wales.
  • It gives a wider access to activities.
  • It raises the Welsh profile of the organisation and recognises ownership by Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers alike.
  • It strengthens the appeal of the organisation.
  • It provides a more effective service.
  • It strengthens the fundraising appeal of the organisation.
  • It demonstrates good will.
  • It attracts Welsh speaking volunteers.

We can provide help and we work with groups to develop activities and opportunities which encourage the sector’s bilingual provision.
These activities and opportunities can include assistance to arrange a language awareness course, language improvement courses and information about learning Welsh courses.

Some Mentrau Iaith can offer a written translation service and simultaneous translation service at a reduce cost for the Voluntary Sector. Look at the translation page for further information.

Voluntary Organisations can also apply for the Welsh Langauge Board’s Business Grant which can provide financial assistance when developing and producing bilingual materials. Contact your local Menter Iaith for more information.

The Welsh Language Act 1993 does not place a direct legal obligation on voluntary organisations to offer services in Welsh, but these sectors become involved indirectly in some situations. For example, private or voluntary organisations which provide care or other personal services on behalf of statutory bodies (such as local councils or health trusts) become subject to the requirements of that body's Language Scheme.

Although it is not a statutory requirement for voluntary bodies to have a Welsh Language Schemes, a number of voluntary bodies prepare and implement Schemes as they support the advantages listed above.

If you would like assistance to prepare a Language Scheme or Policy contact your local Menter Iaith or contact the Welsh Langauge Board.
