Promoting Welsh through the medium of dance
A dance extravaganza has given 14-19 year-olds in Montgomeryshire the chance to keep active during the summer break. The Powys Dance first Bilingual Dance Class, held in Llanfair Caereinion between August 18 and 22, was run bilingually so it gave the chances to promote the Welsh language and and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
In the week the dancers worked with Cartherine Yound from Dawns Dyfed, taking in different styles of contemporary dance, While elliot Bodman and Lee Crawley worked with them on urban workouts involved with hip hop and b-boying. Powys Dance combined the three dance styles to create a unique performance on the Friday night. Beth Smith, the event leader, said: "The performance was a great success on the Friday night, and throughout the week the girls gave 100 per cent and should be highly commended for their hard work and commitment". "Thank you to Menter Iaith Maldwyn, 5x60 and Imprint for their support to make this summer school happen".
The week-long event was funded jointly by Menter Iaith Maldwyn, an organisation looking to boost the profile of the Welsh language in Montgomeryshire, 5x60 a Sports Council for Wales initiative and Imprint, a printing company from Newtown.
